old secondhand,
        broken-in books with
        notes scribbled all
        across the margins
watching cartoons with
        my younger brother
        sitting on my lap,
        laughing when he does
any attempts at
        self-expression,
        particularly the
        independent web
the graceful ease that
        exists among old friends
filling my digital
        camera with picture
        after picture of
        anything and everything
really comfortable
        leather chairs, the type
        that you never want to
        get out of
the beauty that exists
        in every facet of mother

        one a potential promise
        of a life not lived,
